American Literature Association Conference in Chicago
My first time in the great city of Chicago. I loved everything about it. I can particularly recommend the Palmer House Hilton (notice the beautiful ceiling of the lobby bar in the second picture), the historic Exchange restaurant on Michigan (see their atrium in the fourth picture), and Momento Cantina on East Monroe (especially their octopus tacos). Wonderful to hear such great papers from the country’s top scholars of American literature.
Our Easter vacations
Jen takes Maggie to visit Mackie in Portland, where he is serving in the Coast Guard. Lucy, Sam, and I do activities in Waco. This is Jen, Maggie, and Mackie in the beautiful city of Portland:

A night at Richard’s ranch
My good friend and colleague at Baylor Richard Rankin Russell bought a piece of land near Lake Limestone, TX a few years ago, and has built a beautiful cabin on it. He invited a few of us Baylor folks to spend a day and night there:
We had amazing barbeque at Old Union Eats out near Groesbeck; did some work on the land; ate salmon and potatoes; and talked around the burn pile until the small hours. A great day. Check out Richard’s world-class publications on his Baylor faculty page here.
Winter weather hits Texas
Lucy makes a snowball; then goes sledding, watched by Lotus the cat; Jen and I walk through the snow to Starbuck’s.
Beautiful Arkansas
We spent a wonderful week over Christmas break in one of our favorite places – the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas. Joined by Jen’s sister Emily’s beautiful family.
We visited Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, Lost Valley trail, Eden Falls cave, Sam’s Loop trail, Pedestal Rocks and Kings Bluff trail, and Alum Cove trail. Such beautiful country!
